"After years of watching talented graduates struggle with the realities of clinical practice, I realized the problem wasn't a lack of knowledge. The problem was a lack of preparation for everything that happens after graduation."  - Adam Paris, PT

Foreward

Michael J Lehr Sr, DPT, MBA-HCM  - Healthcare Executive

When Adam asked me to write the foreword for this book, I was genuinely honored. Not because he asked, but because I know how much of himself he poured into these pages. This book is the culmination of decades of experience, countless conversations, and a sincere desire to help the next generation of physical therapists build careers they can be proud of. I’ve had the privilege of calling Adam a colleague, mentor, confidant, and dear friend. During that time, I’ve come to appreciate not only his knowledge, but his character. He is wise, generous with his time, dependable, and completely genuine. He has a rare ability to challenge you without making you feel judged and to redirect you toward what matters most when you begin to lose sight of it. Over the years, I’ve watched Adam answer the call time and time again. Whether it was helping launch a new clinic, stepping in to stabilize one facing challenges, or mentoring a clinician who simply needed someone to believe in them, he was there. Not because it was required, but because investing in people has always been part of who he is. One moment that has stayed with me wasn’t about operations or performance metrics. It was watching Adam recognize a clinic director who had overcome significant obstacles. The gift itself wasn’t what mattered. It was the thought behind it. He saw someone’s perseverance, honored it in a deeply personal way, and reminded all of us that leadership is ultimately about people. That moment perfectly captured who Adam is. Personally, Adam’s greatest impact on me was never giving me the answer. Instead, he consistently brought me back to my “why.” Whenever leadership became complicated or the pressure of the moment threatened to cloud my judgment, Adam helped me reconnect with the values that first drew me to this profession. He reminded me to stay true to myself, keep my focus on the team, and define success over the long term—not by today’s challenges or tomorrow’s accolades, but by the legacy we leave through the people we serve. That's why this book matters. This isn’t simply a guide for becoming a better physical therapist. It’s a guide for becoming the kind of professional others trust, the kind of teammate others depend on, and eventually, the kind of leader others choose to follow. One lesson I’ve learned from Adam stands above the rest. Successful people don’t spend their energy justifying why they can’t succeed. They anchor themselves to a purpose that gives them a reason to keep moving forward. They stay grounded in their values, embrace responsibility, and continue to grow. Adam didn’t teach me how to become a better physical therapist. He taught me how to stay true to myself, define what success looks like over the long term, and have the discipline to remain on that path. As you begin your career, my hope is that you don’t simply read this book—you return to it. Let it challenge your thinking, strengthen your character, and remind you why you chose this profession in the first place. If this foreword accomplishes anything, I hope it helps you understand the heart behind these pages before you read the first chapter. You’re about to learn from someone who has spent more than three decades investing in others—not because he had to, but because he genuinely believes the future of our profession depends on it.

"You're not behind. You're not failing. And you're far from alone. You've stepped into a system you were never fully trained to operate in."

"No one expects you to be great in week one. But by week six? Week eight? Week twelve? They expect progress."

"There is a gap between education and execution. It exists in every allied health profession. The gap is not academic. It's operational."
